QUATERNARY GEOLOGY
Quaternary terrestrial, lacustrine and marine sediments are studied to understand glacial dynamics of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, past and future climatic, water quality and other environmental changes. The investigated glacial and high-resolution lake and marine sedimentary records in Finland and worldwide provide information of both natural variations and human impact on the environment.

PhD Antti E.K. Ojala (UTU)
PROFESSOR
My research focuses on subglacial landforms called murtoos, late- and postglacial faults and landslides (paleoseismicity), 3D modelling of Quaternary deposits and characterization of clayey sediments for land use and construction purposes.

MSc Samuel Bronstein (UTU)
UNIVERSITY TEACHER
I’m doing research on the patterns of transportation and accumulation of microplastics and other suspended solids in Archipelago Sea.

PhD Nanna Tuovinen (UTU)
POST DOC
My research focus is in paleolimnology and specially in diatom analysis. I study environmental changes both in freshwater and marine environments.

MSc Viktoriia Pastukhova (UTU)
PHD RESEARCHER
I investigate anthropogenic impacts on lakes and coastal waters using sediment records.

MSc Sohvi Railo (UTU)
PHD RESEARCHER
The focus of my micropaleontological research is on the seasonal succession of diatoms in the coastal Baltic Sea and to recognize the seasonal patterns in the species composition.

PhD Saija Saarni (UTU)
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
My research focuses on lacustrine and marine sediments covering past and recent environmental changes including climatic variability and plastic pollution.

PhD Sarianna Salminen (UTU)
POST DOC
My research expertise lies in past to recent climate and environmental signals in annually laminated marine and lacustrine sediments.

MSc Karoliina Kehusmaa (UTU)
PHD RESEARCHER
I’m studying the evolution and effects of mine water induced permanent stratification (meromixis) in two boreal lakes.

MSc Mira Tammelin (UTU)
PHD RESEARCHER
The main focus of my paleolimnological research is how geology affects the natural nutrient concentrations of boreal lakes and the responses of different lake types to human disturbance.

MSc Mohib Billah (UTU)
PHD RESEARCHER
I study lacustrine and marine sediments to understand paleoclimate and environmental signatures.
